You have too many clothes. And your wardrobe is over-crowded. You won’t agree, but believe me, you do. At this point in our ‘fashion-obsessed’ cultures, the only thing that suffers the most is our wardrobe. Yes, collecting garments can be the dearest hobby for most of us, but overdoing anything is harmful. There’s only one way to dump this bad fashion habit – declutter your wardrobe.
Here are my suggestions on how you can do the undoable and give the space your wardrobe yearns for.
1. BUILD A CAPSULE WARDROBE
You have a signature style. Even if you haven’t realised it yet, you have one. There are always certain pieces that you are comfortable in, pieces that look good. So, what’s the point of keeping things that don’t go well with your overall personality. I am not asking to replace everything that doesn’t suit you all at once, but start investing and build a capsule wardrobe instead. Technically, a capsule wardrobe has those essential pieces that form the most appropriate collection (specifically as per your needs).
Here’s how you can start building your own capsule wardrobe.
2. DISCARD DAMAGED AND STAINED PIECES
You all have that pair of blue jeans with a pen stain on it or a blingy statement top whose sequins are falling off or a leather bag which has cracks all over the surface. You don’t wear or carry them anymore (due to obvious reasons), but you’re still not ready to throw them away. It doesn’t matter, if they are lucky or were gifted by your favourite aunt or your boyfriend, holding onto such pieces, is of no use. Just toss them away!
3. LET THAT GO AWAY
You always have that undying hope to lose those extra few pounds someday in the near future. We all have. But clinging on to pieces that are 2-3 sizes smaller is the worst thing you can ever do to your wardrobe. You unnecessarily keep loading your wardrobe with such pieces with the hope of fitting into them one fine day. As harsh as it may sound, you seriously need to see things practically. Try wearing such pieces and have a good look in the mirror. No fantasies!
4. DON’T CLONE YOUR WARDROBE
Avoid clone clothing. We know that every white shirt is different in its way, but why keep 5 of those when you can try different colours and patterns too. Spare your wardrobe from this horror.
5. REMOVE AND STORE SEASONAL PIECES
Keeping winter essentials in your wardrobe during summers (or vice-versa) is the dumbest thing you can ever do. If you know you won’t be wearing a certain piece for a few months, there is no point letting it sit in your wardrobe and take up unnecessary space. The best thing to do is to store it in your bed or a storage box.
6. BE PRACTICAL
Maybe next time? There is no may-be-next-time in this case. Donate the pieces that have been sitting in your wardrobe for months. Surely, you don’t like wearing them now. It’s just that you haven’t realised it yet. Donate them to people who’ll wear them happily. And, if someone is smiling because of you, there’s no better feeling than that.
7. CALL ON YOUR BESTIE; GET AN OPINION
Discarding your clothes and cleaning up your wardrobe single-handedly can be the most challenging task. And that’s why you haven’t succeeded till date. So, call on your bestie, get fresh insight, and take collective but wiser decisions. Don’t let anything convince your mind to hoard things that are of no use.
